John recommends Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit as the operating system to buy for new computers. Look for 4 or 6 GB of memory, 250GB hard drive will suit most users. If you keep a lot of pictures or use photo editing, you may wish to have 6 GB memory and 500 GB or more hard drive.

Windows XP SP2 is no longer be supported by Microsoft. John recommends updating to SP3, actually keeping up with all of Windows Security updates and an up to date anti-virus and firewall works most of the time.
Of the worm and virus infected computers I receive, 90% have the Windows XP operating system.

If your computer is more than three years old, memory could be a cause for slowness. With all of Windows updates and browser add-on, the amount of memory needed for an efficient computer has increased.
If your computer slows down, you should seek support as soon as you can. If it is hardware, you may lose data, if it is worms, they get a tighter hold the longer they are in the there. This can make they impossible to take them out and the only option may be to reinstall your operating system.

Windows 8 is around the corner. Microsoft expects it to be released later this year. It will include Internet Explorer 10 which will not be compatible with Windows XP or Windows Vista.
Windows 8 appears to be leaning heavily to the touchscreen, tablets and iphone type technology.
Windows 8 does not appear to be a major upgrade for desktops and most laptops from the Windows 7 environment.
